Bomb at Coptic Cathedral – Chairman’s Message

From Canon Huw Thomas EDA Chairman

“A bomb explosion in the Coptic Christian cathedral complex in the Egyptian capital Cairo has killed at least 25 people, officials say. Dozens of others were injured in the blast in a chapel adjoining St Mark’s cathedral during a Sunday service. Many of the victims are thought to be women and children.”

In the face of such evil as these words fail us. We can but let our hearts go out towards those who lost their life, to their loved ones in the raw shock and overwhelming grief they face, to those injured physically and emotionally and to all our sisters and brothers, first in the Coptic Orthodox Church, but also in all the Christian Churches in Cairo and throughout Egypt. We pray for the Christian leaders, especially Pope Tawadros and also for the Egyptian President and Government.  We know our own horror at this outrage is shared by so many of our friends in the Muslim and wider community of Egypt and by all people of goodwill and this brings hope to us.

And as the Gospel encourages us we try to conquer all hatred by love alone

Perhaps some words of a familiar hymn composed by  a Christian leader from these islands during troubled times not many years ago might assist:

“and when human hearts are breaking under sorrow’s iron rod
Then they find that same self-aching deep within the heart of God.”

Kyrie Eleison
